How To

Just Tell Him Already!

E-mail

It never fails. Every season you get up early, set out decoys in the dark, drink your coffee and wait. While you wait for the hands on your clock to hit that magical number you listen to the birds flying in the dark and you think, "man its going to be a good morning". Then legal shooting time starts and you hear it. The one sound that is always noticed, just not by the right people. The sound of a terrible duck caller. Whether its the wrong pitch, tone, or they just won't shut up, a bad duck caller can get annoying. But what do you do if that caller is in your blind?

Blinds and Coverage

E-mail

Duck_Blind_Childress_PaintingHow many times have you been in your blind and those ducks are going by and you bust out a hail call and low and behold they turn, they are coming right in. You start getting ready, these ducks are really checking you out. They like your spread but then they flake off. Missed another chance. Could it have been your blind? This happens all to much. In many areas its hard to find good coverage from all angles. When your hunting the edges of water and there isn't a bush or tree all around, or your on that pond and the only place to be is on the leve or the dam, what do you do?

Making The Most Of Opening Day

E-mail

Opening day is one day I plan to be in the field the entire day and after an agonizing wait to finally get out there; I do not want to waste one minute of it. Nothing can replace the experience of being in the blind for that first pass of the rocket teal or the very punctuated flight pattern of the woodies for it demands a quick mental adjustment from the structured practice course of summer. Most certainly there will be more ventures into the field over the course of the season but the reality is that for waterfowlers Christmas morning is finally here. By desire or design; I follow more or less a very defined blueprint for  the season opener and fortunately I live in a hunting area that affords the opportunity to do this.

Scouting From Home

Yes you can scout from home. You might be wondering, "How? What? You have to be joking?"
No I'm not joking really you can. This is a great way to start. You will have to go out to the spots you might find but it's a way to get the wheels rolling in the right direction.

River Calling 101 - Videos to follow!

E-mail

This is a segment of river duck calling, a style that is unique to rivers and backwater sloughs.

If you are an intermediate caller this is the article for you.

First, to learn this style of calling you will need to have a good feed chuckle of some kind and a good sense of a greeting call. Both 5 note calls and a feed will bring you into the level of this style. They should be practiced and almost mastered at some level to achieve more noted in the end.

When you have those notes ready you are almost here.

The next you will need is to learn mid-range hails with fluency. These notes are crucial to calling ducks on rivers and backwaters. Each note is to have a fall down section of notes mixed in the end like a contest hail, but not as loud. The key is to find the middle range of your call and practice 5-6 note hails.

Once you have achieved that you are halfway there.  Please practice these notes in preparation for my next article. Callers that have worked themselves to intermediate will be pleased and accomplished callers will be amazed in the style changes.

Master the notes and you will succeed.

If this didn't explain it well enough for you, watch for my video and audio lessons coming soon to duckjunkies.com.
