Calling Tips
The Making of a Hand-Made Call
So I was in the shop tonight making a few barrels for some calls that I need to get finished so I thought I would record it and share it with you guys/gals it's a little long but I hope you enjoy. What you don't see in the video is cutting and drilling of the blank. I hope to record doing an insert soon and will post that. This will kind of give you an idea of what goes in to making a hand-made call.
Here is a video of me turning and sanding a Babinga duck call barrel.

How to choose the right duck call for your skill level, situation and style.
With the ever growing number of custom call makers and national manufactures,
"How do you know which one to buy?"
Start by considering your situation. It is important to use the right call at the right time or you are probably better off not calling at all. For example, a large lake on a windy day when you need extra volume to attract high flying ducks would require an open water call but that same lake on a very quiet or calm day might make the timber call your ticket to success. A mid-range or low range call is often the best choice for timber or marshes but windy days could require the volume of an open water call.

Want that extra edge when out in the duck blind? The bouncing hen, also known as the hiccup call, adds an extra note that will help you call in those birds when the pressure is on. In this video, Shannon Smith will help you learn to blow the bouncing hen step by step. |

TeamRealDuck Calling Contests
Have you heard of TeamRealDuck calling contests?
If you haven't, here are some videos to introduce you! The "Real Duck" format is all about realism so the rules when calling are a bit different as you will notice in the videos. These contests are meant to replicate the way you would call in the field. Take a look.
Just Tell Him Already!
It never fails. Every season you get up early, set out decoys in the dark, drink your coffee and wait. While you wait for the hands on your clock to hit that magical number you listen to the birds flying in the dark and you think, "man its going to be a good morning". Then legal shooting time starts and you hear it. The one sound that is always noticed, just not by the right people. The sound of a terrible duck caller. Whether its the wrong pitch, tone, or they just won't shut up, a bad duck caller can get annoying. But what do you do if that caller is in your blind?
